Garden State Bird Club originated in Hillside, NJ in the summer of 2004 by seven individual bird breeders. These breeders of mostly canaries and finch type birds came from various backgrounds yet had a commonality that they all shared. What they shared was a passion for caged bird breeding, specifically canaries and various types of finches.
Many of the founding members expressed frustration at what seems to be the diminishing interest in canary breeding and the lack of satisfaction obtained from membership in local area clubs. Here stands the foundation of Garden State Bird Club. Our club’s main purpose is to generate new interest in breeding small caged birds (canaries and finches).
It seems that with the explosive popularity in hooked bill birds in recent years that interest in finch type birds has waned quite a bit. Perhaps people are attracted to the interactive qualities that hooked bills offer as opposed to the independent personality of canaries and their related types. Be it as it may, we here at GSBA are committed to perpetuating interest in canary and finch breeding so that others and future generations have an opportunity to see the wonders of breeding these marvelous birds.
We hold monthly meetings at Our Lady of Fatima Church in Elizabeth, NJ on the first Friday of the month September through June from 8:00PM until approximately 9:30. The meeting’s focus is on bird breeding techniques and general club business. We discuss various ways to increase our membership. We initially started with about seven members and within a year have currently 38 members.
We hold an annual bird show competition in November on the Saturday after Thanksgiving at the church where we hold our meetings. Anyone interested in joining our club or just coming to see our annual bird show should contact the following club members:
